Ditching the money script
Forget about the money script, focus on your success story
Gary Bloomer | SHAKING THE TREE # 292
Money.
We all want more of it.
I know I do.
Money brings freedom and comfort.
Money gives you options and clarity.
Or does it?
We’ve all heard the whispers: the money script ingrained in us from childhood.
Maybe it was the constant worry about bills piling up, or the subtle message that money is the root of all evil (it’s not, but that’s a different story).
These scripts, whether positive or negative, can shape our relationship with money and ultimately, our success.
Here’s the truth: it’s time to break free from the money script and rewrite your own story. Here are a handful of things to help you craft a plan. Do I have all the answers? Not at all. But what I’ve gained in recent weeks is clarity.
Beyond the bottom line: Financial security is important, no doubt.
But success shouldn’t be solely measured by a bank account balance. Imagine a career that fuels your passion, allows you to contribute meaningfully, and that provides enough to live comfortably. That’s the sweet spot. Rewrite your script to define success based on fulfillment, not just on your bank balance.
Unleashing your inner abundance: Growing up with a scarcity mindset—the belief that resources are limited—can hold you back. I know this is true for me. Maybe it’s the case for you? But when we shift our perspective we realize that the world is full of abundance. Focus on the value you bring, the skills you possess, and the contributions you can make. This shift in perspective creates opportunities you might have missed before.
Talent + passion = financial freedom: The secret to financial freedom isn’t a secret at all. It’s the powerful combination of talent and passion. Are you a natural writer? Explore ways to monetize your skills – freelance writing, blogging, or even writing a book. Do you love working with people? Maybe a career in customer service or sales, where you can thrive in a people-centric environment, is the answer. Align your talents with your passions, and you’ll find the financial reward naturally follows.
Breaking the cycle: reframing your money beliefs Our money script dictates how we handle finances. Maybe you avoid budgeting because it feels restrictive. Reframe the script! Think of a budget as a roadmap to your financial goals, not a prison. Similarly, replace the fear of asking for a raise with the confidence of knowing your worth. Rewriting your money script empowers you to make smart financial decisions.
Building a life, not just a nest egg: Financial security is essential, but it’s not the sole purpose of life. Don’t get so caught up in chasing a number that you miss out on experiences and relationships. Rewrite your script to include travel, hobbies, and giving back to your community. Financial freedom allows you to pursue these passions without constant worry.
The takeaway: your relationship with money is a story waiting to be rewritten.
Break free from limiting scripts and build a life that combines financial security with personal fulfillment. Use your talents, cultivate your passions, and make smart financial decisions.
Ultimately, success is about creating a life that feels abundant, not just in your bank account, but in every aspect of who you are.
As always, thanks for reading.
